RESEARCH
Examining workflow in light of changes in the work environment and evolving library technologies seems like a natural development in the push for improvement demanded by the times. However, restrictions on budgets and staff time, as well as hesitant administration, slow down the process of jumping into a radical redesign of such an important space in the community. Looking into the redesign of libraries in the community with focus on researching needs of libraries, sustainable design methods, and actual case studies is necessary. The need for a true technological center and library in Stockton, California is ever growing, and building a new facility will increase interest in literacy in the community, as well as provide jobs in the library field.
CONCEPT
The Stockton Library of Technology (SLT) will be designed as a kind of “super-library”, with focus on technology integrated into the facility in order to increase literacy rates and provide access to both print and online resources for the community. The library will also provide spaces for community meetings, after school programs, summer reading programs, adult studies courses, additional research access, etc. The design of SLT will revolve around sustainability, particularly with plans on how the space will adapt easily to inevitable change in the near future. In addition, the basic function of a library as a place to find traditional books will be maintained in the design.
